A Lithuanian in the News!
Ruta Meilutyte, a 15 year old Lithuanian, won the Olympic women’s Gold for 100 m breaststroke at the London 2012 Olympic games.
Pronouncing the Lithuanian name:

Ruta: “rue” (as in the plant) –tah’.
or Roo-tah’.
Meilutyte: may‘- loo (as in look without the k) –tea’ – te (pronounced like tare without the r)

Meaning of the name
Ruta is Lithuanian for the rue, a flowering plant used in herbal medicine and in homeopathy.
Meilutyte is the unmarried female version of the male last name Meilutis, or the daughter of Meilutis.
Meilutis is a derivative of the word Meile, which means love.

Syte Reitz grew up in Queens, New York, in a family of Lithuanian immigrants who fled Nazi and Soviet domination during World War II. Her education includes a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, and post-doctoral work at Princeton University. Syte left her job as an Assistant Professor at Oakland University, Michigan, to devote herself to raising her children, and ultimately homeschooled them through the end of high school. She is a member of Madison's Cathedral Parish.
