Stem Cells

Stem Cell Research

The Wisconsin State Journal published an article on stem cell research and the Wisconsin Governor’s race .

The controversy boils down to the difference between two types of stem cells – embryonic and adult – and the science can get tedious to follow.

It’s actually not too complicated…….

Mouse embryonic stem cells with fluorescent marker

  • Adult stem cell research (cells taken from adults, approved by the Church) has yielded hundreds of cures to date.
  • Embryonic stem cell research (cells taken from embryos, killing them, forbidden by the Church) has yielded ZERO cures to date.

The superiority of  adult cell research has been recognized widely — Adult Stem Cell Research is Far Ahead Of Embryonic – Aug 2, 2010, USA Today, ABC News, FOX News, Huffington Post, physorg.com, NY Times ……..)

Yet UW scientists (and WSJ reporters) misrepresent the science to support their own research.   They state that embryonic cells are more valuable in research than adult cells, despite the fact that embryonic cells have produced zero cures during 20 years of research.

In online discussion following the article, some readers jump to ridicule those who have religious objections to the morality of killing embryos ( for fruitless research, incidentally).

St. Peter's

As a Ph.D. biochemist who has done research on the regulation of cellular proliferation at Princeton University, I have no difficulty whatsoever in reconciling religion with science.  Good religion welcomes science.  Good science is compatible with religion.  God is not opposed to science, He invented it.  It is when humans try to manipulate science for politics that a discontinuity occurs.

Scientists rarely have consensus on any issue – scientists are not perfect.  They make mistakes,  bad assumptions, they do poor controls; some even misrepresent their results intentionally for advancement/recognition.  Some scientists even cross moral lines when it comes to experimenting on human beings.

This is where the Church (moral expert) comes in. Dismissing the guidance of moral experts on experimentation with human life is as foolish as dismissing scientific rules for good experimental design.

Hippocrates

The scientists who believe that they can violate ancient rules of morality to satisfy their scientific curiosity are recklessly violating ancient teachings which have been the foundation of our culture and of our medical ethics for millennia. These religious and medical teachings include Judeo-Christian and ancient Greek  medical teaching (Hippocrates).  The teachings are common-sense, logical, and designed (primarily by a mind greater than ours) for our welfare and protection.

Checking with the Church (moral expert) on the moral limits of experimentation with human life is as essential as checking experimental design for good controls!

Why is anyone surprised that the route forbidden by ancient morality, which involves the destruction of human life,  has yielded no good scientific fruits to date?

To summarize the politics:

  • Scientists are split on the issue of embryonic vs. adult stem cell research, so pitting science against Church in this issue is unfounded.
  • The adult cell research (with hundreds of cures) is supported by Republicans Scott Walker for Governor and Ron Johnson for Senate.
  • The embryonic cell research (with zero cures) is supported by Democrats Tom Barrett for Governor and Russ Feingold for Senate.

UW–Madison tribute to academic freedom (Bascom Hall)

Since my kids’ recent graduation from UW Madison, I have great affection and concern for the well-being of the remaining 40,000 young souls trudging around our hometown campus every day.  As they heft their backpacks across miles of campus in search of learning and wisdom, it is my hope that this liberal campus does not succeed in excluding millenia of cumulative Judeo-Christian wisdom from consideration, in the sifting and winnowing process that UW Madison boasts of at Bascom Hall.

Finding some articles which promoted promiscuity and pornography to new students in the local student paper this fall  (authored by a “sexual health educator”), one of my back-to-school projects is to begin refuting those misleading and widespread articles with some truths.

The articles I found completely disregard the health implications of promiscuous behavior, which can have life-changing implications for students.  Regarding sexually transmitted diseases (STD’s), the subject of this post, I came across some pretty interesting information —

  • 25% of all college students have STD’s, and 65% of all STD’s occur in people under the age of 25.
  • For an idea of what kind of life you can expect with STD’s, see this Oprah YouTube , 10/7/2010:
    [pro-player width=’560′ height=’340′ type=’video’]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FsLc68aqbdM[/pro-player]

. (The Oprah YouTube has been removed.  See transcript of this Oprah segment.)

  • Regarding using “protection” – the use of condoms results in only 85% prevention of either pregnancy or STDs, including HIV.  That means that 1 woman out of 7 will be pregnant within one year, and a comparable, paltry 85% reduction in HIV infection can be expected.

To college students — is this the type of gamble you would like to take with your life and with your future?

This is what the Church, your parents, and “religious people” are trying to protect you from.  God invented knowledge, wisdom and love.  Since liberal UW Madison will not teach you God’s brand of wisdom, research it on your own.

Promiscuity Education?

Is our government DISCOURAGING abstinence and PROMOTING promiscuity and birth control for children?

Sounds unwise and unlikely, but facts certainly seem to point to this.

U.S. Dept of Health and Human Services

A recent U.S. government survey indicated that 70% of U.S. parents and 60% of U.S. teens favor abstinence before marriage. The Obama administration refused to release this study for 18 months after its completion, stonewalling numerous public requests for release.  Upon release, the study was not reported by mainstream media, but was described by conservative news sources .  Now, 6 wks after the release of the HHS report, the document is no longer available at the HHS website, and is difficult to find.  Fortunately, a copy of the original PDF document was available on an obscure Czechoslovakian website.  It is posted here.

Why is the Obama administration interested in hiding this abstinence attitude study which indicates that the majority of Americans favor abstinence?

The State of Wisconsin (Governor Doyle’s administration) is also pushing the permanent expansion of all birth control services in Wisconsin, including free birth control services for children as young as 15 years old, without their parental knowledge or consent ( ).

Recent legislation introduced by Senator Risser, passed by the Wisconsin legislature, and signed by Governor Doyle in February 2010,  prohibits the teaching of abstinence-only sex education in the public schools of Wisconsin and establishes an alternative program of sex education for children as young as ten.  The “education” program will be developed by Planned Parenthood, whose perspective on human sexuality excludes abstinence education, and can better be described by Christians as “promiscuity education.”  If you are skeptical of this description, see the Planned Parenthood pamphlet “Healthy, Happy and Hot,” which was distributed by girl scouts at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in March 2010.

The interest of the state and federal governments in the regulation of children’s sexual education, particularly in the teaching of liberalized notions of sexually which are at odds with the beliefs of most Americans, defies reason.

The government is opposing the will of the people, the 70% of parents and 60% of teenagers who advocate abstinence.

The liberal policies promoted by the government are also inconsistent and illogical.

It is Illegal in the U.S. for adults to have sex with minors, supposedly because minors are not yet mentally and emotionally mature enough to make responsible sexual decisions.  Yet Obama, Doyle, Risser, etc., want to encourage public school teachers and medical personnel to provide birth control, to illustrate it’s use graphically to minors, and to use taxpayer dollars to pay for the cost of the encouraging our young in the promiscuous lifestyle.  One adult goes to jail for having sex with minors, while another adult gets paid to encourage sexual activity by minors!

Justice

Do our government leaders not see the inconsistency?  If minors are not mentally and emotionally mature enough to make responsible sexual decisions, how can it be legal to encourage them to be sexually active with each other?  How can teachers get up in front of classrooms full of children and describe graphically to them all of their sexual options?  How can those same teachers in good conscience fail to describe the medical and emotional consequences of promiscuity?  What happens when one of two children who were “sexually active” together turns 18, and now their “sexual activity” becomes “criminal?”

What could the government be thinking?

Does the government have some alternative agenda?

  • Is the government trying to reduce teen pregnancy?  Encouraging early sexual activity does not accomplish this.
  • Is the government trying to reduce population? Encouraging early sexual activity does not accomplish this.  (Besides,  overpopulation is a myth.)
  • Is the government trying to reduce STD’s in the population?  Encouraging early sexual activity does not accomplish this. In fact, the Center for Disease Control recommends abstinence for this purpose.

If government action appears to be irrational, what other groups are stakeholders in these child sex education issues?

Is “promiscuity education” part of the business plan of America’s largest abortion corporation?

Planned Parenthood seems to be closely involved with government in the control and curriculum development for sexual education of children.  Yet there is a serious conflict of interest here.

Planned Parenthhod, Houston, Texas

Planned Parenthood is the largest abortion corporation in America, and their primary source of income comes from destroying human life.  Although Planned Parenthood claims that only 3% of their “procedures” include abortion, this claim is misleading.  When the distribution of 1 condom is counted as one “procedure,” the abortions appear to be rare “procedures” by comparison.  However, at a cost of  ~$500-$1,000 per abortion, the costs add up to over 1/3 of Planned Parenthood’s profits.  Close to another third of profits come from treatment of STD’s.  Planned Parenthood’s profits are over 1 billion dollars per year, and they receive over $350 million dollars in government subsidies (federal and state).  Planned Parenthood would have a clear economic incentive in encouraging extreme and liberalized sex education in public schools for the maximization of their own profits, through both abortion and STD treatment.

Abby Johnson, previously the director of one of Planned Parenthood’s largest national abortion facilities, has described that Planned Parenthood set corporation “Family Planning” goals for doubling the number of abortions they wish to perform in the coming year.  According to Abby, abortion is a priority at Planned Parenthood, that’s where they make their money, and the pregnancy prevention budget of Planned Parenthood is negligible compared with the abortion budget and income.  Another ex-employee of Planned Parenthood has reported that calculations of the number of abortions to be expected per young girl per lifetime are included in their business projections.

Why would Planned Parenthood condone promiscuous behavior in young children?  Is it too shocking to suggest that Planned Parenthood WANTS kids to be sexually active as much as possible, and to come back as repeat customers for numerous abortions?  Consumer reports have rated Planned Parenthood condoms the worst quality of all brands.  Some have suggested that the intentional distribution of defective condoms by Planned Parenthood would increase their abortion business, as well as their STD treatment business.

Margaret Sanger

Alternatively, some suggest that the historical roots of Planned Parenthood influence their policies.  Planned Parenthood was established by Margaret Sanger, a notorious eugenicist who believed in reducing  “unwanted” groups in the population – including blacks, the poor and criminals.  COULD these historical roots could still be operating today?  The fact is that 77% of African-American pregnancies are aborted right now (Abby Johnson).   African American babies are three times more likely to be aborted than white babies, according to data from the U.S. Center for Disease Control.  Since Roe v. Wade in 1973, the black population in the U.S. has been reduced by over 25 percent.

Note inserted February 11, 2015 : The above link is no longer active. But the US black population is 45 million today, and 13 million black abortions have been perfomed.  Do the math- at least 22% of black people are now missing due to abortion.  This is probably a gross UNDERestimate, since most of those 13 million black babies would have had children and grandchildren during the course of the last 50 years .
See Black Death in America.

Could an African-American President be promoting the pre-birth genocide of his own people?   Is the President unaware of these facts?

Exploring the motivation behind the recent irrational and scandalous policies of our governments in the area of child sexuality does not lead to any obvious conclusions.  What DOES make sense in a democracy, however, is to listen to the people and to accept the majority morality – in the case of the United States, Judeo-Christian morality and abstinence.

Ten Commandments

It might be a surprise to some, but there ARE numerous families who succeed in raising their children to be respectful of the procreative power of the human body, and who have no problem with abstinence before marriage.  70% of American parents and 60% of American teens support abstinence.  Numerous families have remarkable success instilling the values of self-control, respect for others, and delayed gratification in their children.

My own family has been very successful in instilling these values in our children, and we are typical among our Madison, Wisconsin Catholic community.  Other faiths also have great success in this area.  Hence the overwhelming statistics quoted above; 70% of parents and 60% of teens favor abstinence before marriage.  These are realistic and wise goals.

It’s time for our government to start listening to the American people and to stop legislating poorly thought out, inconsistent, and possibly profit-motivated immoral policies, which can only serve to endanger our children and the future of our civilization.

How do we oppose such an agenda?

The Obama administration refused to release this study for 18 months after its completion, stonewalling numerous public requests for release.

September is here, and everyone’s getting ready for school. I stumbled across a Badger Herald article entitled “Great Sexpectations,” which flippantly steered new UW student arrivals toward sexual experimentation, and towards facilities such as Planned Parenthood.

So I submitted a comment. (Hope it gets published!)

"God, our Light"

Motto: Numen Lumen ("God, our Light")

Flippant attitudes toward sex lead to pain and anguish.

The human body carries the ability to create new human life. It’s called sex.

Misuse of this ability, just like misuse of any other human function, can lead to great trouble.

A recent government study has shown that 70% of parents and 54 % of Teens say that sex before marriage is wrong. Release of this study was delayed by the Obama administration for 18months (study dated Feb ’09, released only Aug 23, ’10), presumably because the administration did not like the results of the study.

The fact of the matter is that there are reasons for caution and for the morality that has been respected by our civilization for thousands of years. The reasons include reluctance to kill preborn children, reluctance to deal with psychological problems, depression, STD’s, and reluctance to destroy one’s chances of finding true love in a good marriage in the future.

Bascom Hill

At UW Madison, you will rarely hear this more cautious and conservative attitude that is shared by the vast majority in America. At UW Madison, you will most likely hear a forced, radical liberal agenda, driven by the pursuit of immediate gratification, regardless of future consequences to yourself or to others. UW Madison is often quite intolerant of Christian sexuality.

———————–
Hopefully anybody admitted to a university with the academic caliber of UW Madison will already have learned the benefits of delayed gratification, and will not jump into recreational sex as this article seems to condone. DO your homework (start with the links in this article), find out the consequences of your actions, and take the trouble to locate the 54% of teens in your class who think it’s wrong to have sex before marriage.

There are lots of groups on campus who can support you in this choice – starting with St. Paul’s Catholic Center — for the numerous students coming from Catholic homes, or for anyone else interested in a Christian perspective on life. Madison’s Cathedral Parish is another great place to look for fellowship and support in a holy and healthy lifestyle.

Liberals and conservatives might both be surprised to read in the World Book Encyclopedia that “liberalism is a confusing term, because its meaning and emphasis have changed considerably over the years.” The definition of liberalism has shifted dramatically over the past several centuries. (1)

Fundamentally, liberalism is a political and economic philosophy that emphasizes freedom, equality, and opportunity. However, freedom can be understood in more than one way, with the emphasis either on freedom from specific restrictions, or emphasis on the freedom to have opportunities. (1)

The liberalism exemplified by the revolutions of the 18th century (American, French) emphasized curtailing the ability of governments to restrict the individual freedoms of citizens. In the 21st century, however, liberalism has come to mean the use of government to assure many opportunities for some citizens at the expense of other citizens.

These two perspectives on freedom are at odds with each other. The more a nation frees itself from governmental restriction of citizens, the more the number of government-created opportunities shrink. Conversely, the more government “guarantees” or creates opportunities, the more mandatory restrictive legislation (which encroaches on individual rights) must be passed.

Never has this been more obvious than in the present Obama administration. Present day liberal Democrats seem to define freedom primarily in terms of access to opportunities – such as health care, education, immigration, and sexual freedom. However, as more legislation is passed to guarantee these “freedoms,” more money must be spent, and those footing the bill become more irate and feel less and less “free.” The liberalism of 2010 boomerangs, and begins to be viewed as tyranny by citizens who must pay the taxes.

In 2010, 47% of Americans will not pay any income tax at all. These non-tax-paying Americans collect numerous benefits and are entitled to numerous opportunities. Credits for middle-income families have grown so much that millions of people earning more than twice the poverty wage pay no federal taxes at all. The remaining 53% of Americans, who are actually paying the bills for the benefits, and whose taxes are rising astronomically, feel that they have lost their freedom, the freedom to enjoy the fruits of their labor, their paycheck. Thus, the Tea Party movement is born, and citizens who were previously politically unengaged decide “enough is enough,” and band together and rebel to win freedom from excessive taxation and governmental control. Liberal attempts to increase freedom boomerang and result in decreased freedom for many, as well as encroachment on the right to own property.

Liberalism in the extreme can also encroach on freedom of religion. The bill-paying half of the American population is now forced to pay for services which they consider to be morally reprehensible — abortion, contraception, and state-mandated Planned Parenthood sex education (or promiscuity education!) in public schools. When 67% of our citizens oppose the government funding of abortion, but they are forced to pay the taxes which provide abortion for others, it becomes difficult to call this liberalism—instead, it resembles totalitarianism.

Now, it becomes the conservatives who must become the revolutionary activists and must lobby for change. They are lobbying for liberation from oppressive taxation and oppressive legislation. Thus, in 2010, the conservatives have become the new “liberals.”

This system reversal has a darker side, too – the more unrestricted “freedoms” become guaranteed for all (such as free health care), the higher the cost, and ultimately, rationing becomes a necessity, as admitted by President Obama . Ironically, the initial goal of the government health care plan was to include all, not to ration health care. But now, rationing will simply change which group must forgo health care—for example, shifting from the jobless doing without health care, to the aged forgoing health care.

Escalating costs of health care also motivate modern “liberals” to use distorted logic. The Speaker of the House recently represented abortion as cost-saving— saving the cost of birthing, raising and educating extra human beings. However, the killing of preborn humans is suicidal for our society, and extreme liberals do not seem to realize that a future without children is a future without workers and without tax revenue.

Ultimately, “freedom” is an elusive commodity, and what creates freedom in one sphere generally also reduces freedom in another sphere. It is not possible to guarantee all freedoms for all people at all times, since our freedoms impinge on each other. As the two factions of our society battle out their preferred freedoms, the pendulum of history (and of the definition of liberty and of liberalism) swings back and forth and makes adjustments.

In 2010, by my estimate, we have gone full swing.

Conservative is the new liberal!

Anti-Catholicism is the last politically correct prejudice still unquestioned in America.

For fear of lawsuits and reprisals, Madisonians have stopped challenging most groups on exercising their freedom of choice – they do not challenge racial groups, non-Catholic religious groups, or ethnic groups for their choices and lifestyles.

Why do you expect Catholics to defend their choices and beliefs? We do not attack you demanding you to defend why you like to go to the Overture Center, the Chazen Museum, the Capitol Building, or to Taste of Madison.

Some of the criticisms of the Catholic Church in Wisconsin State Journal discussion are preposterous.

  • Madison’s Capitol building is very grand and imposing, as are numerous affluent banks around the Capitol Square and the Overture Center. Yet some suggest that Catholic Churches in Madison are too extravagant. Catholic Churches are very humble by comparison. Apparently you respect government, money and entertainment sufficiently to tolerate imposing accommodations for these activities, but you want to require people who hold God in high esteem to grovel in humble surroundings.
  • There is a similar double standard in the criticism of statues in Catholic Churches. The display of photos in one’s living room, of paintings in the Chazen Museum, and of portraits and statues in government buildings seems to be acceptable in Madison, yet when the Catholic Church honors the memory of important people with paintings and statues, suddenly you decide that this constitutes idolatry.
  • Finally, the portrayal of the Catholic Church as an institution laden with money is completely false. The Diocese does not receive one penny from Rome, nor is Rome wealthy (except for the value of her “Capitol building,” which requires maintenance, just as Madison’s does). Those who sue the Catholic Church are suing the Madison citizens in the pews today. When Diocesan coffers are depleted by lawsuits, the same critics attack the Church for insufficient charitable service to Madison (which still exceeds the charitable service provided by the City of Madison).

This double standard constitutes bigotry and generates false and vile urban myths about Catholicism.

“Not a hundred people in the United States hate the Roman Catholic Church, but millions hate what they mistakenly think the Roman Catholic Church is.”

Feminism Updated

The phrase “feminism” is bandied about quite freely by liberals, who feel entitled to define the identity of women and to declare what is best for all of them.

As a New York City girl starting college in 1969 during the development of Gloria Steinem’s social experiments, I have had a lifetime of opportunity to try those ideas on for size. I can assert from experience that the Gloria Steinem “feminism” falls short, and that in 2010, “feminism” is in dire need of an update.

There is no question that the 1970’s “feminism” brought some refreshing and positive changes to our view of women and their potential role in our culture. Acknowledging that women are equally capable of intellectual achievement as men, changing female fashion to be more practical and less punitive than before ( I’m particularly talking about the shoes!), and giving women more choices in life, were all very positive developments.

However, the “feminists,” in their passion to give women “choices,” actually ended up NOT giving women true choice, but railroaded all women into an alternate role, the radical feminist. The new role was different from the previously defined narrow role, but was just as narrow and just as imperative, as the previous role had been.

The critical error made by the old “feminism” was a failure to recognize what is important to most women – the family. In some (LOL) “ideal” world peopled by perfect and affordable servants, and by men who were more feminine than most actually are, perhaps a woman could pursue an exciting career, find love and family life, and be satisfied with the help she received in raising her family.

But the reality that we young women starkly confronted was that the support for raising one’s family simply did not exist, that most shortcuts were designed to be taken out on the children and on the marriage, and that two careers simply could not be optimized simultaneously.

Feminists became more and more radical in confronting these problems – if the time, care and compromise required by family, husband, and children added strain to a woman’s professional life—the solution was to eliminate them. Divorce skyrocketed, children were aborted, and the most successful females became those like Elena Kagan, who dispensed altogether with husband and family. Simultaneously, depression, health problems, and drug addiction escalated among women.

Some of us, noticing the impossibility of the assignment (superwoman at work and at home), made a “choice” to focus on one job, the home. Like most men, who do not undertake two careers simultaneously—say, lawyer and neurosurgeon – we decided to do one job well rather than to do two jobs poorly.

There was no tolerance in the “feminist” culture for this choice, and the social demotion that accompanied it was blatantly obvious at every social event we attended after making that choice. The previous awed gasps I used to receive when introduced as a biochemistry professor evaporated, and were replace with the “flee the leper” response when I was introduced as a Mom at home.

I am by no means the only woman to have figured this out, although most women “at home” are not too vocal about their choices.

Some women are blessed enough to be able to sustain a career without neglecting their family life – those who have the unusual family support group that, say, Sarah Palin has, and are able to have the best of both worlds.

But regardless of our individual choices, “feminism” is in radical need of an update.

  • ALL women’s choices should be welcomed and supported, especially the essential and sacrificial choice of staying and serving at home. This choice is in dire need of recognition and respect.
  • A woman’s happiness should NOT be contingent on contraception and abortion. Killing a woman’s children does not liberate her in any way, and does not lead to happiness.
  • Women should not be expected to work double time, as most working women do. Actually, many of us at home also work double time, so would that make it triple time?
  • People should come to the mature realization that the world is not teeming with eager and perfect servants anticipating the honor of caring for our children at low cost. The care of children is loving, rewarding, sacrificial and demanding work that will NOT be performed adequately by a rotating staff of low-paid child-care providers.

In life, we have to make choices. We cannot have it all. We are forced to indicate with our choices what is most important to us. Good things often have to be relinquished for better things.

Most people, when interviewed at the end of their lives, quote family and friends as their biggest source of joy and satisfaction. Faithful lifelong spouses, children who have made good choices, are much more rewarding and satisfying than a successful career. I have personally derived much more joy and satisfaction from family than from biochemistry research at Princeton University. Few people can have both, and our choices indicate which is most important to us.

Feminism is in dire need of an update – at very minimum, ALL women’s choices, including the choice not to neglect one’s family, must be respected. It’s time we educated our young women to realize the errors of the old feminism and to realize that they WILL have to make some choices—real choices, not radical agenda choices like abortion, which only serve to hurt everyone.

“Choice” cannot be so narrowly defined as to include only the killing of one’s child. Judging from women like Michele Bachmann, Sarah Palin, and numerous others, the new feminism has arrived, new “choices” are becoming possible, and the old radical feminists are faltering on their way out.

Watch out, here comes November!
